The DX164‑W is a wall‑mountable remote I/O expander (“stagebox”) in the DX line of Allen & Heath. It is intended especially for permanent or semi‑fixed installations (walls, under stage floor “dip traps,” etc.). It provides mic preamps and line outputs, and connects back to a compatible A&H digital mixing system over a network protocol using EtherCon (locking) ports. It is designed to integrate tightly with dLive, SQ, Avantis, and AHM‑64 systems.
Key Features and Specifications:
| Spec / Feature | Details |
|---|---|
| I/O Configuration | 16 input channels (mic/line, XLR) + 4 XLR line outputs. |
| Mic Preamps | Fully recallable mic/line preamps, with phantom power (+48 V) per input, pad (‑20 dB), gain range +5 to +60 dB in 1 dB steps. Input sensitivity from approx −60 dBu up to +15 dBu; maximum input with pad in is about +30 dBu. |
| Input Impedance | > 4 kΩ when pad is out; > 10 kΩ when pad is in. |
| Noise Performance | Mic EIN (equivalent input noise) is ~ −127 dB with a 150 Ω source. Residual output noise around −92 dBu (20‑20 kHz) when muted. |
| Outputs | 4 balanced XLR line outputs, relay protected, output impedance < 75Ω, nominal output +4 dBu (equals 0 dB in meter), and max output level +22 dBu. |
| Sample Rate / Converters | High quality converters, capable of 96 kHz operation. |
| Network / Connectivity | Uses EtherCon locking connectors; there are two ports: one primary (“DX A”), one secondary (“DX B”) that can be used for either redundant connection or cascade (daisy‑chain) to another DX164‑W or DX168. Uses a single Cat5e (or better) cable for main connection. |
| Form Factor / Mounting Options | Wall or on‑wall mountable; can also be installed in stage floor pockets or “dip traps.” Fits into a standard 12″ × 12″ NEMA electrical box with custom brackets. Has a robust, compact design. |
| Power & Redundancy | Multiple power options: universal AC mains (100‑240 V), can be wired via IEC or screw‑terminal/gland modules; also supports a 12 V DC input either as main supply or backup. The DC option can be used for redundant power. Power consumption about 35 W max. |
| Operating Conditions | Temperature range roughly 0 °C to 35‑40 °C; weight ~3.2 kg; dimensions ~210 × 87 × 210 mm. |
